Trichomoniasis
Not reportableCurableAlso called: trichomonas vaginalis, trich, TV
What it is. Trichomoniasis ("trich") is a common, curable STI caused by a tiny parasite. It spreads through sexual contact.
How you'd know. Many people have no symptoms. When symptoms happen, they can include discharge (sometimes frothy or with an odour), itching or soreness, or burning when you pee. Men usually notice little or nothing.
How it's tested. A swab (often one you can collect yourself) or a urine sample, checked with a sensitive test called a NAAT.
Is it curable? Yes — a short course of antibiotic tablets clears it.
Treatment. The usual medicine is metronidazole, taken as tablets. Do not drink alcohol while taking it and for at least 24 hours after your last dose (some people are told 72 hours) — the combination can make you feel quite sick. Your partners should be treated too, even if they feel fine, so it isn't passed back and forth. Wait until you and your partners have finished treatment before having sex again.
Anything else? Because catching it again is common, a repeat test in about 3 months is a good idea. If you are pregnant, tell your provider — treatment is still recommended, and they'll guide the timing.
